Lee Academy takes the lead in preservation of historic, irreplaceable documents

By Office of Institutional AdvancementMHPI Scanner

Lee, Maine - Lee Academy has been selected by the Maine Bureau of Parks and Lands to serve as a preservation site for historic documents. This means the Academy will have use of a top-of-the-line digital scanner, the same kind used by the Library of Congress, for four months to capture important documents before it’s too late.

Sponsored by the Maine History Preservation Initiative (MHPI), the scanner is being loaned to Lee Academy starting in February 2010 and it will stay until the end of May. While here it will provide area residents an opportunity to digitally record documents and pictures for future generations to see and use in an electronic, searchable database. Lee Academy welcomes all faculty and students, as well as members of neighboring towns, museums, schools, etc., to digitalize items they feel pertinent and to share in the new and creative ways of digitally recording important pieces of history. Examples include scanning and recording items ranging from art to college portfolios, personal documents, historic photos, and more.

Five people associated with Lee Academy recently traveled to Pemaquid, Maine, to see the equipment and to gain a better understanding of how it can be put to good use. The group included Nate Ghiglieri, an LA history teacher; Candance Gifford ’84, registrar; Richard Wyman ’60 and Freda Preble Parker ’48, trustees; and Issac Bunker, senior LA student.

Questions on availability may be directed to Nate Ghiglieri at (207) 738-2252 ext 123, or to Richard Wyman HERE. You may also visit the MHPI website at www.mainehpi.org to learn more

Once the equipment arrives, Freda Parker, the historian for LA’s Board of Trustees, will be in the Alumni Office between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. every Thursday to help anyone who wants to copied or digitally preserve any items.
