Lee, Maine — Students from Lee Academy, both local and international, recently visited the Lee-Winn Elementary School to share cultural activities surrounding the Lunar New Year, often referred to as Chinese New Year.
On Thursday, February 4th LA students visited the Lee-Winn Elementary School in an effort to share their culture through fun and interesting activities with children in grades Kindergarten through grade four. The school was split into two groups, K-2 and 3rd & 4th graders, and the high school kids worked with them making paper lanterns, writing their names in Korean and Happy New Year in Chinese, making tiger masks (2010 is the year of the tiger) and making dragon figurines.
The Lee Academy students also paraded through the school in large, hand-made dragon costume, much to the delight of the younger children.
LA students taking part were Maria Yu, Song Seung, Henry Jung, Tony Esho, Yu Zhang, Brian Li, Emma Richford, Noah Albino, Trong Nguyen, Ahn Jae Chung, Diyue Miao, Alice Luan & Dora Zheng.
Lee-Winn Elementary School Principal Pamela Hamilton praised the high school students’ visit. “Any time we can bring in people from another culture or corner of the globe it is a wonderful experience for our young people. The high school students were warm and engaging, and the elementary kids truly enjoyed their time learning about the older kids’ home countries.”
