Cassandra Dana Selected To Attend Youth Leadership Summit in Washington, DC

By Office of Institutional Advancement

Lee, Maine ~ Cassandra Dana of Indian Township, a senior at Lee Cassie DanaAcademy, has been selected as Maine’s only representative to the 2010 NCCEP Annual Youth Leadership Summit to be held July 17 — 21 in Washington, DC.

Blending leadership development with the experience of participating in a professional conference, the NCCEP (National Council for Community and Education Partnerships)/GEAR Up Youth Leadership Summit teaches young people how to be advocates for their schools and communities, empowering them to become a voice for their peers. Students are given the opportunity to present their thoughts and opinions to a large group of educational stakeholders, ensuring their message is heard. Students work collaboratively over the course of the Summit to create a report focusing on their concerns about education today. The report is presented to conference attendees – an audience of over 1,900 educators, administrators, policymakers, and business leaders.

The conference is sponsored in partnership with GEAR Up, a program designed to support students who are economically disadvantaged in preparing for, accessing, and succeeding in postsecondary education.

Of nearly 300 applicants, Cassandra was one of only 32 high school students nationwide selected to take part in the Summit, which includes an all-expenses paid trip to Washington, DC. A consistent honor student, Cassandra is a member of the National Honor Society and the Lee Academy Community Service Club. She will graduate, with high honors, from Lee Academy on Saturday, June 5th, and plans to attend the University of Maine in Orono in the fall majoring in Journalism.

Cassandra is the daughter of Nicholas Dana and Annette Dana of Indian Township.
