Lee, ME: Today Lee Academy is celebrating another Panda victory, after one of our alumni graced the podium in the Tokyo Olympics. Mihailo “Michael” Vasic, plays 3-on-3 Basketball for Serbia, who won their first 7 outings in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. His team was defeated by Russia in the Semifinals yesterday, but went on to win against Belgium to claim their Bronze medals.

Mihailo Vasic travelled to Lee Academy from his native Serbia for its preparatory basketball program in 2013, taking a full load of classes while working on his sport year-round. Susan Linscott recalls he was a strong Physics student, and focused on his ambition to become a professional athlete. Traveling to Lee Academy from Serbia, English was not his native language so he took an ESL class with Kendra Ritchie. She said “Focused and intense, on the court and in the classroom. He was a leader and a positive influence on all the other students in the room”. Michael, as Mihailo was called as a student, left Lee Academy as the 5th ranked player in the state for the 2014 class according to the New England Recruiting Report.*

He went on to play basketball in Pennsylvania for the Harcum College Bears for two years before joining the NCAA Division II Chargers at the University of New Haven in Connecticut. He began playing 3-on-3 basketball professionally in 2017, and took 4th place for Serbia’s team in the 2019 FIBA 3x3 World Cup.
