Judith Cobb Mallett Planetarium

Lee Academy is home to the only high school planetarium in the state of Maine.
About

Judith Cobb Mallett, an alum of Lee Academy Class of 1964, devoted much of her time and endless energy to the revitalization of the Lee Academy Alumni Association and its support of her beloved school. As her daughter Katherine said, “The top three loves of her life were her family, music and her school, here in Lee.”

The original planetarium after nearly 60 years (still the only high school planetarium in the state of Maine) was very much in need of aesthetic and technological upgrades to once again make it a valuable tool for educating students. The Cobb family has a legacy of serving Lee Academy, and Judy’s daughters Katherine and Kristen, and sister Jeannie, chose to celebrate her life and love of her school by establishing a fund to restore the planetarium with a state-of-the-art digital full dome projection system. Their substantial donation began a campaign that was promoted at Reunion 2024 where long-time LA benefactor and alum, Blaine Moores ‘55, learned of the amazing project and offered to finish funding this unique educational tool.

Lee Academy’s Steve Kennedy and Dave Dodge began researching a projection system best suited to the existing dome, and with the help of Shawn Laatsch, director of the Versant Power Astronomy Center at UMaine, the state-of-the-art Digitarium system was purchased and installed. Lee Academy is very grateful to everyone who made this possible and cannot wait to share this amazing learning experience with area schools and communities.
