Ty Thurlow

Ty Thurlow ’02 — Head of School

Mr. Thurlow returns to his geographical and educational roots as the Head of School at Lee Academy. A proud alumnus of the Class of 2002, Mr. Thurlow began his career in education right here on campus, serving as an English teacher, coach, and dorm parent, and Summer Program Director.

Over the past thirteen years, Mr. Thurlow has dedicated his career to educational leadership, serving as a high school principal in Downeast and Southern Maine, as well as a Principal and Athletic Director in Northern Maine. He holds certifications as a Superintendent and a Building Administrator through the Maine Department of Education. His academic background includes a Bachelor’s degree in English, a Master’s in Educational Administration (M.Ed.), and an Educational Specialist (Ed.S.) degree.

"As a native of Lee, I understand intimately the transformative power of a robust education within a rural community," says Mr. Thurlow. "My formative years were defined by the time I spent on Lee Academy’s campus—experiences that fundamentally shaped my character and eventually drew me back to my roots as an educator. Having been molded by this institution, I am deeply driven to provide that same caliber of mentorship and excellence to the next generation."

Beyond his professional dedication to the academy, Mr. Thurlow is deeply rooted in the local community. He and his wife, Amanda, are the proud parents of four children—their three eldest have graduated and are beginning to forge their own paths, while their youngest continues their schooling. Outside of the office, Mr. Thurlow enjoys spending time with his family, including his parents who reside in Lee, and exploring the vast outdoor recreation opportunities the region has to offer.
